Tropics Go Out In Style

Congratulations to our Mission Bantam C3 Team for a banner winning playoff series. They finished with a winning record of 12 wins and 2 losses. A victory well earned players.

The Mission City Tropics midget C1 hockey team finish off the season in style, Winning a play off banner, a bronze metal in Delta and bringing home another Gold from Kelowna. During the two and half months of play offs and two tournaments the Tropics went 23-3-1.

In the play offs the Tropics fell behind early, having a hard time collecting only 12 of possible 21 points in the first half, second half of the play offs they faired better taking 18 points of a possible 21, finishing off with a 11-2-1 record.

In the Delta tournament the boys were on fire going 3-0 and out scoring the opposition 29-8 in the first 3 games, before meeting the regular season champions from Chilliwack and losing 6-1. The boys didn't hang their heads and came back the next day to beat tournament host North Delta in the Bronze metal game 7-3 and going 4-1 in the tournament.

By the time the Tropics hit Kelowna they were determined to make up for the missed opportunity in Delta and came out strong, going 3-0 and out scoring the opposition 18-5 in round robin play. At a team dinner the eve of the semi finals and finals the boys decided the way to win was come out strong and well rested. Team captains Adam Vetterl, Wyatt Desjardins and Spencer Marshall implemented a curfew of 10:30. The curfew paid off, Tropics beat the Kamloops Broncos 4-2 in an early morning game(7:30 am). The best was yet to come, later that afternoon the Tropics were set to play the heavily favored, high scoring Prince George Cougars. The well rested Tropics came out strong taking the play to PG and hemming them in their own end for the first 5 minutes of the game before a rap-around goal put them up by one. a minute later 2-0 Tropics, it was 3-1 at the end of the first and the boys cruised to a 4-1 final. Great Season Tropics you should be proud.

Team roster - Adam Vetterl, Arman Gerwal, Brandon Aujla, Brayden Herslet, Cobe Dean, Dilon Hill, Hayden Meier, Jas (Nasty) Gill, Kailem Aitken, Kevin Sidhu, Kyle Klenk, Kyle Sunder, Mackenzie Hollingshead, Marshall Holingshead, Spencer Marshall, Stephen Droux, Wyatt Desjardins

Playoff Banner for Bantam C3

Congratulations to our Mission Bantam C3 Team for a banner winning playoff series. They finished with a winning record of 12 wins and 2 losses. A victory well earned players.

Midget A1 Qualify for Provincials

Mission's Midget A1 team has qualified for this year's Provincials in Prince George. Mission A1 started their road to the Provincials beating by Seafair A2 in the single game elimination, qualifying them to play a four point series against Coquitlam A2. It took four games to get to 4 points, but Mission made the final four tournament after winning an exciting game in Coquitlam, scoring 49 seconds into overtime to win 1-0, on a goal by Jesse Forester. Goalie Chad Cromar made spectacular saves along the way to give Mission the chance to win.

The very next night, Mission played 1st place Aldergrove in game one of The Final Four tournament, but unfortunately came up short. Mission was in familiar territory facing elimination with two games remaining. The third year leadership of this team really stepped up in the elimination games and put together a convincing victory over North Shore Winter Club.

Mission's final game of the Final Four was against heavy rival Port Moody. Prior to the game Mission had lost 3 key players due to sickness and the Flu, with many others sick but continuing to play. Mission trailed most of the game, and were down 3-1 with 15 min to go. Head coach Wes Mcleod rallied the boys letting them know they needed to score only 2 goals as a tie would qualify them. Moments later Dawson Nelson scored to narrow the margin to 1 goal, and minutes latter scored his second of the night to tie the game at 3-3. Port Moody pulled their goalie trying to regain the lead, but 3rd year Kyle Mooney sealed the victory scoring his 2nd of the night on an empty net.

Big thanks to the parents who were cheering on the boys and all the non-parents from Mission who came to Aldergrove to cheer on the boys. The entire team played their hearts out and the 3rd years showed leadership to never quit and play their role. This team will represent Mission well at this years 2016 provincials in Prince George!

2016 Mission A1 Roster: Billy Tiendel, Brendan Bell, Chad Cromar, Dawson Nelson, Dayton Spink, Dylan Newman, Garret Brown, Hayden Vetteryl, Jackson Pekeski, Jaeden Choy, Jesse Foster, Kyle Mooney, Nathan McKeigan, Nick MacDonald, Owen Gossen, Riley Wertman, Sean Sidhu.

MMHA Picture Day - December 5th, 2015!

MMHA Players and Parents.

As you are already likely aware, MMHA’s annual picture day is happening this Saturday, December 5th in the area between our two Mission rinks. We’re sharing the schedule to insure that all parents know what time their team is scheduled. Note that it’s best to show up 30 minutes before the “Be Ready By:” time as the players need to be in their gear and ready for photos.

As in previous years, we’re asking all our players to bring donations for the St. Joseph’s Food Bank. The team with the largest total donation will win a pizza party for their team!

Note: Hockey 1 players - please be ready for the first time on the schedule.

MMHA Fundraiser to sell Athletix tickets

MMHA Parents.

There have been several questions asked recently about our MMHA Fundraiser to sell Athletix tickets. Our association conducts fundraising events such as this to help keep the cost of playing hockey reasonable. In fact, MMHA’s registration fees are amongst the lowest in the lower mainland, running at about 70% of our neighbours to the South and East. Your executive team works hard to keep our costs under control to make hockey available to all Mission’s youth but we also need to raise money to do this.

Prior to last season, we had attempted a number of different fundraising activities which included a few different attempts selling Abbotsford Heat tickets, which produced minimal or negative returns. To avoid raising registration costs, we launched the Athletix ticket campaign last year which delivered better, but not stellar results.

We know that teams do fundraising to offset the costs of tournaments, year end parties, referee costs for exhibition games, however, this does not cover the costs of development sessions for players and goalies, coaching and referee clinics, equipment and ice-time, which alone exceeds $150,000 annually. We do receive money from the BC Gaming fund, though this money is never guaranteed, and in combination with registration fees, still leaves us a little short. Without a successful fundraising campaign, we would have little choice but to raise the registration fees accordingly, which we fear would prevent some from the opportunity to play the game that we love.

We know that this fundraiser is a good option for us, with roughly 75% of all the money brought in coming directly back to our association. Your team can directly benefit as well by selling 50 or more tickets per team, your team receives $5 back per sold ticket. Sell 100 tickets and your team gets $500.

We have heard lots of positive feedback from our prize winners. These $20 tickets give you the opportunity to win of 5 cash prizes weekly for 17 weeks! As it is a weekly draw on the same ticket so you can win more than once per ticket. From an association standpoint, Athletix also manages the BC Lottery requirements, payouts and reporting, relieving our association from all the risk and much of the administration of running such a program.

We are asking for your support to make this annual fundraiser a successful one. If we sell just 5 tickets per family by December 13th, we will hit our target for this season, keeping hockey affordable for all our players. Speaking from experience, they are not difficult to sell, and if you ask around, there are many prize winners from our association and community who received prize cheques from Athletix, making their investment in the ticket and our association very worthwhile.

Sincerely,

Mike Palmer, President, and the MMHA Executive Team.
